Do existing methodologies encourage religious experience as a form of spiritual materialism?

April 1995

Abstract
It is suggested that the useful work done by scholars on religious experience could be complemented and extended by looking at questions of impulse, orientation and continuum in relation to the pedagogical or transformative nature of the bulk of the writings of the mystics.

Comment (31/5/1998)
This essay lays out some of my reservations about focusing on mystical or peak experience, which take place in time, as against a change in the continuum of the individual. My views on this have not changed.
