In 1990 I invited the managing director of Borland, then Philippe Khan, to visit the University too see whether he would like to sponsor my work. He was kind enough to come and see us, but did not want to take the idea of sponsorship further. All the work on show, which was given the title 'Memories, Rotations, Reflections', was produced through programmes written in Borland C, one of the software packages that had made Borland a success. I used 8-bit TV framestore hardware, generating a series of images that were to form the basis of the later ray-traced work. The last image in this set is one of the very first ray-traced images --- all the rest were rendered using my own software developed from the work of Kenneth Knowlton. |
